KRISTI HAINES HERMAN

Artist

Houston, Texas

As a full-time painter, Kristi Haines Herman uses abstract art to thoughtfully process autobiographical experiences, ranging from subtle observations to pivotal life events. Phrases and words ruminate in her mind, turning into simplified, abstracted figures that convey her inner thoughts. Haines Herman is strongly influenced by movement in her artistic expression, due to her many years in dance. Movement is depicted through various gestural lines, shapes, and textures, allowing the audience to venture across the canvas; thus, a visual dance from one edge to another on the painting’s surface. In addition to abstracted figures, Haines Herman’s work explores the use of flora for expression. The inherent similarities between flowers/plants and human forms, particularly their pliability and curved lines, enable the artist to further convey poignant ideas through visual movement.

Ballet was Haines Herman’s first love in the art world, starting at age five. She learned to use body movement as an outward expression which allowed her to explore various audience reactions. This would later correlate with her artwork. In her late teens, dance and visual art would intertwine with time on stage as well as painting for expression. Gradually, visual art became her primary artistic avenue.

Haines Herman attended Mary Baldwin College in Staunton, Virginia, where she majored in studio art under the guidance of professors Frank Hobbs and Polly Dixon.  She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Texas at Austin.  During her studies at UT, she was encouraged and challenged by many talented art professors, including John Yancey, Michael Mogavero, and David Deming.  Upon graduation, Haines Herman also acquired a certification in art education for grades Pre-K through 12.  She taught visual art in various schools, ranging from 80 to 1100 students, while continuing to sell her paintings in her free time.  Her creative career path eventually shifted to focus on the fashion industry and home interiors. Years later, her beloved father shared a deeply resonant observation about her: "I feel you are your true self when you paint." This insight inspired Haines Herman to return to her canvases and reintegrate dance movement into her practice, enabling her to further her career in the visual arts and find genuine fulfillment through the creation of impactful works.

Kristi Haines Herman’s artwork is included in various private and corporate collections throughout the United States. Her paintings are available at Reeves Art + Design in Houston, Texas, and online at Artsy and 1st Dibs.

ARTIST STATEMENT

My artwork is a personal haven for processing visceral responses, ranging from elation to sorrow. I extend this same sense of refuge to the viewer, providing a space that fosters the unburdening of one’s deepest thoughts, free from judgment or inhibitions.

Due to my background in dance, I approach each abstract painting by mentally choreographing brief dance sequences that embody my ideas. These imagined movements become simplified human forms in my sketchbook, with an ever-present heroine in a long, billowing gown that carries motion and fluidity. From the sketches, figures are rendered with loose paint marks onto the canvas. Utilizing abundant, lyrical lines, I meticulously deconstruct the figures, reimagining them as a dynamic interplay of gesture and movement. The accumulation of brushstrokes and paint layers creates visual tension, rhythm, and texture, inviting viewers to wander across the canvas and experience abstract, two-dimensional choreography. Further, by incorporating color cues, varied linear elements, and conceptual titles, I encourage the audience to become active participants in interpretation, promoting personal connection.

In addition to my abstract work, I explore the use of flora to express my ideas. Given the inherent flexibility of flowers and plants, it was a natural transition from utilizing human movement to floral movement. Heavily textured canvases, filled with curved, windswept flower petals, represent life’s challenges and uncertainties. Jagged-edged stalks, stems and foliage contrast with dominant, bulbous flowers to add balance to the flowers’ softness. Small groups of colorful blooms face the fragmented flowers, symbolizing new growth from the broken petals along the course of life. The blooms are reminders of hope and resilience. In closing, visual movement is the cornerstone of my autobiographical artwork derived from both the figure and flora.
